About MN HIE

Unique collaboration
MN HIE is a not-for-profit organization with a public/private governance model that includes providers, health plans, and the State of Minnesota. MN HIE’s purpose is to improve the health of all Minnesotans through more informed decision-making by the provider and patient at the point of care.

Secure technology
MN HIE is the state-wide secure electronic network and record locator service designed to share clinical and administrative data among providers in Minnesota and bordering states. This allows for effective management and coordination of health care services between multiple health care providers.

Clinical and administrative efficiency
MN HIE exchanges important clinical information not previously or readily available to providers. MN HIE services can be embedded into an existing EMR or accessed via a secure Web application. It also offers administrative staff quick access to information necessary for efficient patient managment.

Better coordination of care
Providers have quick access to a broad set of patient information from multiple data sources. Medication history is now available and new services will be available by Fall 2009, including patient eligibility, lab results, immunization history and exchange of medical record information.

ER Patient

Quick diagnosis and treatment
A patient from northern Minnesota experienced multiple seizures while visiting the state fair. At the hospital, health care providers performed extensive tests. Hours later, relatives contacted by phone  informed the provider of the patient’s extensive epilepsy history and the seizure medications she was taking.

With MN HIE, the health care providers can access the patient’s medication history immediately and possibly avoid several tests.
